Passionate post: Food Insecurity
There should not be an issue with food insecurity on college
campuses, specifically HBCUs. There is more that the community leaders and
college administrators, and the government can offer to the students who need
food. This problem should be resolved before students stop attending college
because they cannot focus in class, due to hunger and financial issues. As a student, if I could not afford food
while in college, I would seek out resources. If those resources did not offer
much support I would start a petition to advocate for students who are
suffering from hunger while attending college.
I am very passionate about helping others. The food banks
and pantries that are offered on some campuses should be available to all
campuses, or offered in a nearby location.
These students who are suffering from food insecurity needs help; however,
the resources that are available are not being promoted enough for the students
to gain access of the resources. I
believe that the individuals who are responsible for the food banks should
start a social media page, pass out flyers, and promote more in order to get
the attention of the students. I have a
strong belief that once the students find out about the food resources, they
will do much better in their academics.
I always stress a lot about schoolwork and test, adding on
hunger would only increase the stress that I am already feeling. I cannot imagine
how students feel when they have a test coming up, but they cannot focus on
studying because they are hungry. These students have to suffer because they do
not have money to buy anything to eat, and some do not have access to food
pantries or resources that offer food. There should be a change in the
university system that works in the favor of students suffering from food
insecurity. No student should feel
unnoticed while going to college.
While some students express their need for hunger, some
students are afraid to come out about suffering from food insecurity. These
students feel like they will be looked at differently by their peers as being
“broke” if they cannot afford food they need to survive while in college. Not
having food can lower a student’s self-esteem. These students may feel less of
a person because they cannot provide for themselves. No student should have to
feel this way because they are hungry and needs help. However, if food banks
and pantries become more prominent on campuses, and administrators and
community leaders get involved more; more students will feel more comfortable
with speaking out to the university that they are suffering from food
insecurity.
I like that you like helping others. Food insecurities is a problem that I've been noticing. I live on campus and there is not much of a variety in the cafe. Normally, I skip dinner or lunch but thats a problem because I will be hungry. Good post!
ReplyDeleteStudents often time skip meals do to the choices that are offered. I think students should come together to create a new menu that can address most of their needs so more students can focus on their education.
ReplyDeleteGreat detail and point of view
